so you’re special in a not really kind of way, never mind, keep writing, take the first book you just couldn’t put down and read it again, this time slowly, mine was Rebecca, I read it by a window sill in one go, and then write for more than five minutes a day, the rest of the day look for things to write about, though sometimes you’ve got to know where you’re going, give yourself the possibility to be successful and start with the end, just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it isn’t writing, and read widely, listen widely, watch people wildly, and very important, try to get rid of your ideas before you embrace them, then if they’re still there, holding on to your thumb like children crossing the street, never ever let them go, look at culture and make lists, odd moments, odd blokes, peculiar folks, seriously unused words, sounds that go together, books to never read, cities to explore and re-word, above all don’t romantically pursue negativity, or leave messages in a bottle, or write for people, or tell them how to feel, but put yourself first, you’re your first reader, draw on many styles, explore everything, steal shamelessly, beware of rules and punctuation, and also think in images and music, make friends with rhythm, and finally always, always taste your writing
